about

inspired by titian's 'Sacred and Profane Love'

“this song is a musing on the thematic ideas presented in the painting, and also my interpretation of the work. It considers the role of women in society, while also giving them a voice, independent of the male gaze. I was initially inspired by the symbolism in the artwork, for example the juxtaposition of the cherub and the sarcophagus, and the myrtle as an image of fertility. I basically materialised the conversation between the two Venus’; the verses see the sacred Venus being free and empowered, while choruses are from the perspective of the profane Venus who is bound by mortal realms, obligations, and the traditional understanding of womanhood. Ultimately the song is about wanting to reveal oneself, in every sense of the word, but being unable to.”

lyrics

you dress to impress
at the sarcophagus
look to the distance
what do you see?
he swirls at the water
your pride cannot falter
a foolish mortal
can your love reign free?

bound by the myrtle
grows plenty, so fertile
fate like finger encircled
pleased is He
the torch is burning
i know youre yearning
not yet discerning
only earthly

you say that its over
its getting real old
playing these games
of fiction and resolve
for God is my witness
and welcome you are
his embrace is calling
collapse in his arms

sometimes i run through the field
want to reveal
all that i am
sometimes i run through the field
relieved of my garments
just as i am

a storm is brewing
your husband is brooding
no longer amusing
is your foreign stare
who cares for intention
divine intervention
profanities unmentioned
but constantly there

soft cherub, or angel
my sister so faithful
corrupted and ungraceful
wallows in despair

sometimes i run through the field
want to reveal
all that i am
sometimes i run through the field
relieved of my garments
just as i am

sometimes i run through the fields
exposed and revealed
in all that i am
sometimes i run through the field
freed from these realms
just as i am

oh my sweet one
you have lost your way
